A simple cough remedy

I feel like so many of my posts start with "I was digging around on Pinterest..." but it's true.  So many of my inspiration comes from things that I find on Pinterest.  I am so very thankful for that site.  Prior to Pinterest, I bookmarked everything in my life, and then struggled to remember what was what.  Or I left 5 million tabs open on my browser.  But I digress.

So I was digging around on Pinterest (groan) and came across a recipe for homemade cough remedy.  It's hardly EVER that anyone in my family gets sick, we have allergies, but for the most part, we are pretty healthy clams over here.  Lucy got a bit of a stuffy nose a few days ago and a little cough.  I decided to make some of this up and give it a shot.

I read a LOT of the comments.  I wanted to know what I was getting myself into.  Most of the comments that were directly related to actually trying it, said that it was pretty spicy and that if giving it to a child, you would want to soften it up some.  And so that is what I did.

The original recipe is here, but I it is pretty much the same, but I added more honey to make it sweeter, which meant I needed more water because the honey made it really thick:

1/4 teaspoon Cayenne pepper
1/4 teaspoon powdered ginger
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
4 tablespoon water
4 tablespoons of honey (I used local raw honey like suggested)

It was still pretty spicy and Lucy's face was pretty funny when she took a spoonful, but, later that night, she wasn't coughing anymore and her nose was less stuffy.  The next day (yesterday), she was not stuffy at all.  Today, she was a little stuffy, but I hadn't given her any of this stuff after the first time.

Tomorrow, I plan on giving her some more and seeing if it helps.  Oh and for full discloser, I gave her two heaping spoonfuls of honey after too so that it would help dilute the spicy, and I also took some (only from the baby spoon that I gave to her) and I feel a little less stuffy too.

In conclusion, I would say this stuff works.  And even if it's just coincidence that her nose dried up it's not like it's hurting her to give it to her.  Give it at shot, then come back and let me know how it worked for you!

  2. Sounds interesting! Honey is definitely a remedy for coughs but I should try this recipe. I tried something else that works well too. Cut up an onion and place it in your child's bed/crib near the head. (I put the onion in a cup to prevent a mess...) This doesn't cure the cough but when the onion is around the child at night it stops them from coughing.
