Mother's Day Garden Ladybugs

We were really lucky when we moved to Seattle because we found the best neighborhood to move into.  There are 5 kids, Lucy is the eldest of the three girls, Dexter is the eldest of the two boys.  It's really awesome and this summer is going to be amazing with all the kids.

I thought it would be fun to get the girls together to do a Mother's Day project.  I was trying to figure out a project that would be fun for the kids, but something that would be great for the moms too.  Now I know as a mom, anything your kids give you is meaningful.  I have small scraps of paper hidden away that Lucy has given me of scribbles that she said were a drawing of me and I don't get rid of them.

I wanted to do something with the kids that would result in something their moms could place next to their door, on their windowsill, or maybe just in their vegetable garden and be reminded of when their daughter painted it for them.

So I came up with Garden Ladybugs.  This is not a new concept, but it was for the kids.  And they loved it.  I mean, what kid doesn't love to paint and make a mess?

We started off with just some basic rocks from the garden.

And then we painted them red (mine is the big one, I was showing them as an example).

And the aftermath, look at that mess.  I love it.

The kids did a great job painting.  They really did.  There was minimal mess (for me) and they had a blast.

Granted, they didn't really "look" like ladybugs, but for 3-5 year olds, I think they did a great job!  The one just above is Lucy's.  She wanted her bug to have stripes.  I am very excited to add Lucy's to the little garden by our front door so that every day when I see it, I can smile and remember this time in our lives.
