In my final Silhouette Challenge of this year, I wanted to test my skills a bit further. I knew I wanted to make labels and use sketch pens, but I also wanted to take it a step further. This project could have easily been done on my printer. It could have easily taken 5 minutes. But I wanted to learn, I wanted to challenge myself, which is what this monthly challenge as been all about anyway.
I used Avery labels instead of the Silhouette brand because that is what I had on hand. Of course, Silhouette doesn't have a setting for Avery brand labels, so I had to create it myself. I measured the sheet of labels and then drew lines in my file that represented where the label cuts were.
Then I typed out the names of each bin I was planning on labeling. Of course I had to take it a step further and put some pictures on too. This helps Lucy and the rest of the kids that come over since not all the kids can read yet.
Next, I had to determine what I was going to print in what colors.
The time consuming part, is that every color you want you use, you have to start this process over. So for all the pink, I had to select the pink, print, then reload. Then I had to unselect the pink and select what I wanted to be purple. Rinse, lather, repeat.
Also, you have to make sure when you go to cut, to change your settings from "cut" to "sketch pen."
Additionally, I used sharpies with the sketch pen holder instead of the Silhouette brand sketch pens. I am not sure what the difference is, I just had a bunch of Sharpies and thought it made more sense to have the pen holder since it was more versatile.
It posed to work out just fine too.
On the labels that I didn't sketch out a picture on, I hot glued an example. Puff balls for the puff ball box, a small card on the card box and then I used duct tape on the duct tape box and put Girl Scout stickers all over the Girl Scout box.
I really love how they turned out. Like I said before, I could have just run these through my printer, but I wanted to learn, really learn, the ins and the outs of my machine and this was a good test run for me. It will especially be helpful when I do the labels for some of my homemade Christmas presents this year!
Like in past months when I did these Silhouette Challenges, there are a bunch of other bloggers participating! This month is slightly different because we are hosting a giveaway for an Amazon gift card that can be applied in buying your own Silhouette machine!

These are super cute Randy! Great job on getting all those lines into Studio. I have to say, my favorite is the puff balls! I just want to go up and poke them. (The inner child in me is giggling as I write this. Uh oh!)
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the picture addition on the labels!!! Now they are custom AND kid friendly. Good job!!
ReplyDeleteI really like how you challenged yourself to not only use your Silhouette, but to learn functions that will help you in the future! I started out with vinyl, and could do that all day long, but am also trying to venture away and do more! I think labeling should be one of my next projects on my to do list, especially now that I have seen how yours turned out all cute! Great job!
ReplyDeleteLove your labels, nice idea adding the pics for the kiddos.

ReplyDeleteWay to really challenge yourself this month! And from what I've seen on FB, you are sketching it up of late! So clearly, it was worth the effort in really learning the ins and outs of using those sketch pens. Love the idea of including pictures and props with your labels for the little ones to "read," too. The label-lover in me is swooning over how organized everything looks. Brava! Thanks for participating in our Special December Challenge & Giveaway!
