Ombre Butterfly Magnet Board

**This post contains affiliate links.**

Remember that Silhouette group I've been apart of the last few months?  You might remember some of the things I have done like the Seattle Skyline picture that is also now my header, or the labels I made for my craft room and don't forget my super awesome Halloween banner.

Well this year, each month will be themed and this month's theme is Organization!  I was going to do some more labels, but well, I did that last month.  This month I wanted an excuse to finish Lucy's magnet board for her crafting area (that I will show to you guys one day).

So using my Silhouette and vinyl I got from my startup kit, I busted out this amazing magnet board!

The frame was a left over piece from her rainbow birthday party last year.  I was really happy that I finally found a purpose for them.  Matt I was getting frustrated that there were these random frames in the garage not being used for anything.

I went ahead and bought a piece of sheet metal from the local craft store for $8.  The only problem was it was two inches too short in width, but instead of freaking out, I just cut a yard stick I had to fit the sides.  It looks a little silly, but well, I like it.  Lucy doesn't seem to mind though.

Anyway, this is how the board looked when I finished it.  But something was missing.  Also, do you know how hard and frustrating it is to have red walls?  That's the one part I hate about renting, is that we can't paint.  What I wouldn't give for white walls...

So I decided to decorate it a bit.  Lucy really loves butterflies, so I decided to pull out all the pink and purple shades of vinyl I had and decorate it with butterfly stickers, ombre style.

I never quite understood the purpose of transfer paper until recently.  I was doing a few other projects and was having a hard time transferring the vinyl to my work surface.  I decided to stop being a rebel and try the transfer paper and it was amazing.

It helps so much when trying to lay down projects without bubbles.

And here is the finished project.  I really love how it came out!  Lucy was super excited too, she seemed so shocked that I put butterflies on her board, "Mommy, how did you know that pink and purple butterflies are my favorite?"  It takes everything in me to say "well because you tell my 324324549802973257 times a day."

Of course, I figured I should share what our work space looked liked when I was done.  What can I say, I am a messy crafter.

But I took 10 minutes and put everything away and cleaned it up for her.  She was extremely happy with me for cleaning up her space...and promptly vacating it too.

  1. So cute! I love that pink frame! And yes, transfer paper is a Silhouette user's best friend...don't know what I would do without it, haha. I love that your daughter has her own crafting space, that's so neat! I bet mother-daughter crafting time is so special!

  2. Cute, cute, cute! I love the way you didn't let the size of the metal sheet stop you, I think your fix is great! And transfer paper is fantastic, isn't it? I reuse mine several times, it helps me feel better about using and tossing something.

  3. Beautiful! I love it. How great that she has that physical reminder that you do listen to her because her favorite pink and purple butterflies are on her wall. :) Transfer paper is amazing. I just started working with vinyl and contact paper. Is so much fun!

  9. I love how you write about Lucy, she sounds so adorable! If you really want to get around the no painting issue, one thing you can do is starch some fabric to the walls. I've done that before. The starch acts like a glue, but it comes off nice and clean (though you might want to wash the wall when you're done). That way you can cover over the red that you despise and look at some clean white while still keeping the rental in good condition.

  13. I love this. My mom would love it even more. Maybe if she's lucky I'll do something similar for Mother's Day. But probably not...I already have something in mind. And if I just do all the crafts you post, I won't have anything original for my blog and I'll just be another Randi Groupie. Because you have tons other than me, right? Right? Yeah. That's what I thought.
